The Transition to Electric Vehicles in the Netherlands Gains Momentum

The transition to electric vehicles in the Netherlands is accelerating rapidly, particularly in the transport sector. This has led to a growing demand for charging infrastructure. To support entrepreneurs in this transition, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) has recently introduced two new subsidy schemes: the Subsidy Scheme for Private Charging Infrastructure at Companies (SPRILA) and the Subsidy Scheme for Public Charging Infrastructure for Heavy Transport (SPULA).

These schemes provide entrepreneurs with the opportunity to receive financial support for installing charging infrastructure on their own or rented premises, as well as for publicly accessible charging points for heavy transport. In addition, entrepreneurs can also apply for subsidies to receive expert advice related to these investments.

SPRILA: Charging Infrastructure on Private or Leased Premises

The SPRILA scheme is specifically designed for entrepreneurs who want to invest in charging infrastructure on their own grounds, such as business parks or distribution centers. This subsidy covers part of the costs for purchasing and installing charging stations for electric vehicles, including passenger cars.

The amount of subsidy depends on the size of the company and the capacity of the charging station. For SMEs, up to 40% of the costs can be reimbursed, while large companies are entitled to a maximum of 20%.

One of the challenges of installing charging points is the limited capacity of the electricity grid. To address this issue, SPRILA also offers the option to apply for additional subsidies for a stationary battery. Such a battery can store energy during the day and charge vehicles at night, reducing pressure on the grid and providing greater flexibility.

SPULA: Publicly Accessible Charging Points for Heavy Transport

SPULA focuses specifically on the installation of publicly accessible charging points for heavy road transport, such as electric trucks and buses. These charging points must be located in areas that are accessible to everyone 24/7. The ultimate goal is to establish a nationwide network of charging infrastructure for heavy electric vehicles.

As with SPRILA, it is possible to apply for subsidies for a stationary battery if grid capacity is insufficient. For 2024, a budget of €15 million has been allocated for this scheme.

Additional Advice and Support

In addition to financial support for installing charging points, subsidies are also available for obtaining professional advice. Entrepreneurs can be reimbursed for up to 50% of the costs of external consultancy. This may include advice on how to optimize the use of the electricity grid or on the best way to install charging points.

This extra support is intended to prevent entrepreneurs from postponing necessary investments due to a lack of knowledge. In total, more than €42 million has been made available for SPRILA Acquisition and SPRILA Consultancy in 2024.

How to Apply?

Applications for SPRILA can be submitted from September 24, 2024, until December 31, 2024. Applications for SPULA open on October 1, 2024, and also run until the end of the year. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, so submitting early is important.

With these new schemes, the government aims to accelerate the transition to zero-emission logistics and contribute to a future in which the Netherlands will be completely emission-free by 2050.
